When is a Relationship Over? 9 Signs it Might Be Time to End it

Few things in life are more complex than going through a rocky relationship with your girlfriend or boyfriend.

A lot goes into it: you both have to be equally as committed and there needs to be a natural fit between the two of you. It can be tough to give up on a relationship, even if you see the signs that its time for the fling to end.

Everyone falls in and out of love. Unfortunately, that’s just a part of life.

You might start to think to yourself “when is a relationship over?”. Here are the telltale signs that it’s time for both of you to start seeing other people.

1. Everything’s a Fight

Every couple fights at one point or another. That alone isn’t a sign that it’s time to end what you two have.

However, when it reaches a point where everything, even the small things, are a fight then it’s time to call it quits. The fights are stemming from built-up frustration between both of you.

Either one of you is disinterested in the relationship or the both of you are. Either way, you both deserve to be happy and find someone with whom you mesh better.

If you’ve noticed this lately and have zero interest in working towards fixing it, that means it’s time to move on.

2. Next Steps are Unclear

A good relationship is all about communication. One of the most important things to communicate about is both you and your partner’s future intentions with each other.

Are you both interested in getting married to each other? If so, what does that timetable look like? If not, what does a future commitment look like in their eyes as far as moving in together, having kids, etc?

One side showing a lack of commitment, while the other one is fully committed, is asking for a messy ending.

Either communicate your future intentions with one another or, if you don’t foresee a future, then it’s time to end this partnership.

3. You Suspect That They’re Lying

Maybe you believe your spouse to be lying to you about certain areas of their life or with your relationship.

Perhaps you can’t shake the feeling that they’re cheating on you. If so, check out this information from Bust A Cheater for signs they’re cheating.

Trust is one of the most important aspects of a healthy relationship. So, whether they actually are cheating/lying or not, not having any trust is a significant sign that it’s time for a change.

4. Lack of Common Interests

All couples start dating because of their physical attraction to one another. Then as the relationship continues, you begin to peel back the layers to find common interests.

Sometimes, however, you start to realize that you two have nothing in common.

Granted, this doesn’t happen naturally. It takes effort on both sides to find those interests that you both share.

It might seem harsh, but as soon as you discover there isn’t anything in common, you should break it off. You both owe it to yourselves to find someone that you do share interests with.

5. You’re Apart More Than You’re Together

Don’t get this twisted. This doesn’t mean that if you don’t spend a majority of every 24 hours together that you should break up. Having that expectation is unreasonable with things like your career, family, and other friends in your life.

However, it’s important that both of you make a conscious effort to spend the free time you both have together.

You both should want to hang out and be with the other one, if you’re not finding that to be the case then it’s time to find someone else.

6. Empty Promises

Everyone’s had those relationships where their girlfriend/boyfriend makes promises and never delivers on them.

The more that happens, the less trust that the relationship will have between the two of you. Even if they’re your dream guy/girl, if they don’t deliver on their promises, they’re not someone that deserves to be in your life.

As soon as you notice that you expect them to break their promises, you need to kick them to the curb.

7. The Relationship Has Become Stale

Sometimes you’ll be enjoying a relationship and the spontaneous things that you’re both doing together.

You like the rhythm that you’ve both found. However, that rhythm becomes too repetitive and it starts to make the relationship boring.

Then one of you tries to switch things up to keep it alive and the other one has no interest in doing so. If so, that’s a sign that the entire relationship has run its course.

8. Zero Effort on One Side

Relationships are all about give and take. You should expect to receive as much from the other person as you pour into them. That’s a reasonable expectation.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work that way. One person will sit back while the other one puts forth all the effort.

Spoiler alert: that’s never going to change. End it now and save yourself months or years of doing the work for two people.

9. You Feel Alone

You should never feel alone while you have an official relationship with someone else.

The entire purpose of dating them is to let themselves and everyone else know how committed you both are to being together.

If you ever feel like you’re in this thing by yourself then break up with them. You might as well be single and free to mingle than tied down and feel by yourself.
