With an attempt to become more fuel efficient, Ford based its second generation of Mustangs on the Pinto (hence the smaller size). This car came out just before the 1973 oil crisis and helped pave the way for more eco-friendly vehicles.

The third generation of Mustangs was restyled to fit more people in the car, in two different body styles. While this version had a little less sex appeal, it helped Ford hone in on what drivers wanted in their sports ride.

The fourth generation Mustang revamped the image of this classic car, by creating a “new edge” body, by borrowing several elements of the 1960s style. 1994-1998 was a period of the new and improved Mustang, with more power, sharper lines, and no option for a hatchback.

Fast forward to the fifth generation from 2005-2014, Ford borrowed more from the classic Mustang look from the late 1960, calling it “retro futurism.” The Shelby featured an incredibly powerful supercharged  V-8 engine and more features like stability control, and new wheel sizes. Although the economy took a hit in 2009, especially in the American auto industry, the Mustang kept improving, reaching 420-444 horsepower near the end  of 2012.

Now comes the sixth generation Mustang. For the first time in 30 years Ford put a turbocharger back inside this beast. Push-button start, eco-options, new interiors, myfordtouch, and so much more. The new Mustang is more modern, but still retains that old school style. Whether you’re a proud owner or just a fan, this ride is an American classic that continues to inspire and evolve.
